The Shih-Tzu was bred as a lapdog in Tibet from a combination of Pekingese and Lhasa Apso. After the British Invasion of China, the Shih-Tzu was nearly extinct, with only seven males and seven females remaining. All Shih-Tzu pups today can be traced back to those 14. Key characteristics of this breed include their flowing, silky coat, distinct moustache and beard, large wide set eyes, and a tail that arches over their back. Coming in 19 different color combinations, their beautiful coat consists of a long top coat over a feathery bottom coat. While many Shih-Tzu owners enjoy the long show coat, many opt for a shorter “puppy cut”, generally requiring a trim every four to six weeks. This pup may need many repetitions to understand commands, making them a little more difficult to train. Because of this, these loving, playful pups will need consistent, patient training. The Shih-Tzu was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1969.

As mentioned above, all of the purebred Shih Tzu puppies in my responsible breeding program are brought up on a first-class puppy curriculum to help them live up to their full potential. Furthermore, the Shih Tzu puppies remain in my home for the first 10 to 12 weeks of life. Puppies learn irreplaceable life skills from their mother and littermates during the critical puppy socialization period.
